The Long Awaited AEDP ESSENTIAL SKILLS Course is here!

LEARN AEDP In-Depth, Systematically, & Experientially While FORGING Connections With Other Like-Minded AEDP-ers!

We will be piloting the AEDP Essential Skills course in New York City starting in the fall of 2010, over four 3-day weekends (Fridays and Saturday from 9:30am -5:00pm; Sundays from 9:30am-2:00pm). The different basic skill sets necessary to practice AEDP will be introduced each weekend, with theoretical foundations and with videotapes in the mornings, followed by live demonstrations and group experiential exercises in the afternoons.

Healing-oriented and attachment based, AEDP’s practice is radical in its translation of current neuroscience and developmental research into day-to-day, moment-to-moment clinical practice. Experiential both in its relational work and in its in-depth emotional explorations, AEDP’s interventions are deeply rooted in the phenomenology and dynamics of the transformational process that emerge in environments where the individual feels safe and known. Intuitively resonant, AEDP has been called “deceptively simple.” Thus this course.

AEDP Essential Skills, aimed at practitioners, will be practical. Our aim is to teach, in both left brained and right brained ways, skill sets, concrete and specific “what to do” and “what to say,” and then “what to do and say next.” Different skill sets will be introduced, explained, illustrated and practiced each weekend, so that participants will emerge with both an understanding and a felt sense of how to practice AEDP.

Theory, Videotapes, Experiential Learning: Make the Implicit Explicit and the Explicit Experiential.
Participants will learn the theoretical foundations and essential clinical skills necessary to practice AEDP. Participants will learn the AEDP clinical roadmap, decision tree, protocol, and the right-brain language of experiential treatment. The training will include didactic material, clinical videotapes of actual session from AEDP faculty members and Dr. Diana Fosha, live demonstrations, daily experiential exercises, and small and large group processing.  A key component will be the experiential work with the experiences of safety, attachment security, and transformation, and all phenomena that those experiences give rise to. The concentrated time that participants spend together immersed in learning AEDP aims to foster a culture of trust and generosity which allows for: risk-taking, and a supportive environment that is uniquely suited for optimal experiential and reflective learning. Participants will have opportunity to explore their own experiences of AEDP by being both at the giving and receiving end of experiential exercises.

Essential skills will be experientially explored and didactically demonstrated so that participants will develop both a (right brain mediated) felt sense as well as a (left brain mediated) understanding of them:
-- the entrainment of transformance and healing forces within the self
-- how to translate social engagement neuroscience to clinical work
-- how to engender secure attachment from the get-go, and thereafter
-- how to work with patients who do not take to AEDP
-- promoting right brain experience: gaze, contact, tone, lexicon
-- how to work with resistance to right brain experience
-- self-at-best/self-at-worst
-- moment-to-moment tracking
-- the four states and three state transformations of the transformational process
-- working with defenses: bypassing defenses, defense restructuring
-- undoing unbearable aloneness
-- pressuring with empathy
-- dyadic affect regulation: attunement, disruption, repair
-- phenomenology of affective experiences, transformational markers
-- metaprocessing: how AEDP interventions register inside the patient
-- metatherapeutic processing of transformational experience
-- the healing-oriented phenomenology of AEDP: categorical emotions, healing affects, receptive affective experiences
-- the integration of right brain and left brain experience to unleash cascading transformations, and solidify therapeutic gains

AEDP Certification

The AEDP Essential Skills course will count towards certification, and in combination with 20 hours of individual or group supervision, will move you to AEDP practitioner Level 2 on our website!

Faculty
The NYC course will be anchored by Natasha Prenn, LCSW, who will co-teach it with Senior AEDP Institute Faculty members Benjamin Lipton, LCSW, SueAnne Piliero, Ph.D., Eileen Russell, Ph.D., and Steve Shapiro, Ph.D., each of whom will co-teach a weekend. Experienced, local AEDP practitioners will assist with the experiential practices. Diana Fosha will be on hand for the launching of the course.

Structure of the Course:
Mornings will be devoted to teaching AEDP basic concepts with a focus on the teaching of essential skills of intervention, making extensive use of clinical videotapes to explain and entrain what these practices look like in action. Afternoons will be devoted to closely supported and supervised experiential exercises in dyads and triads, with ample opportunity for both processing and discussion in small and large groups.

Readings
The basic text for the course is Diana Fosha’s The Transforming Power of Affect (Basic Books, 2000). Further recommended readings will be provided for each weekend.
